"The toughest decisions in organizations are people decisions – hiring, promoting, firing, etc.  The ability to make good decisions regarding people represents one of the last reliable sources of competitive advantage, since very few organizations are very good at it.”

               Peter Drucker

Seems like I'm spending half my life working and the other half looking for work.  This page contains links that I use (or have used in the past) that I think are of value in the process of looking for employment. Of course, nothing beats networking.  However, if you know of something that's particularly useful, let me know and I'll add it to this page.

For those who have recently lost their jobs, I've included some links regarding health insurance under Other Stuff.

Read this Book Now!

cover

"Rites of Passage at $100,000 to $1 Million+: Your Insider's Lifetime Guide to Executive Job-Changing and Faster Career Progress in the 21st Century"  by John Lucht.  This is MUST READING!  I first read this book in 1995 (pre-Internet days) and I can honestly say it changed my life.  Now it includes use of the Internet.  Like taxes and insurance, you need to understand this stuff even if you don't like it.  Trust me, it's well worth the $30 bucks!!  (Click on the book to purchase from Amazon.  Do it now!)

And after you have read the book, sign up on RiteSite.  Could be the best $100 you've ever spent.  John Lucht 'gets it' and his site proves it.  PS  If this advice changes your life, you owe me a bottle of wine.  See my home page for advice in that department.

Job Search Sites

Like the name says, this is THE monster.  Even if you like your current job, you're nuts not to post your resume here.
Looking for work? Visit HotJobs.com To tell you the truth, I like these guys better than Monster.
Search Jobs on CareerBuilder.com Lots of jobs, but annoying format.
TheLadders.com The Ladders come is different flavors (sales, markeing, finance) and seem to have some pretty good jobs listed.  However, I think they use some deceptive practices in advertising 'composite' job listings in order to build their inventory of prospects.  Just my opinion.
Don't know what these guys are all about.  If you use them, let me know how it works out.
Search 1000's of Jobs at Job.com FREE These guys are new to me.  Any feedback?

Cover Letter Help

This is a very strange site.

It's worth a click just to see the cheesy animation.  (Make sure you move your cursor around after it's over and watch the dude's eyes.)  Scary!  If you purchase, let me know if it's worth the $39.95.  Some pretty outrageous claims, but who knows, maybe it works.

Are you struggling to write a resume or cover letter?  Then buy this now.

Resume Distribution Services

These services claim to distribute your resume to thousands of headhunters (and in some cases directly to participating firms.)  Trouble is, you don't know who the headhunters are, so it's like buying a 'pig in a poke'.  I've tried three so far.  Be prepared to get SPAM by multi-level marketing outfits and other people trying to sell you services you don't want.  I also suspect there is a lot of overlap between these services.  Still for $50 to $100, it's probably cheaper and faster than assembling a list and licking stamps!

Interview Help

Ok, you got the interview.  Now what?  Time to prepare my friend!  It's a sad fact that the job you want will not go to person who's best qualified.  It will go to the person who interviews better than all the other candidates.  Most of this this stuff costs money, but then again, free advice is generally worth what you paid for it.

You may be perfect for the job, but chances are there are three other people equally qualified who are going to talk to the same interviewer you'll be speaking to.  Probably on the same day.  So how are you going to be the one the interviewer picks?

You will have to be the most articulate and one least rattled by the unexpected interview question.  This information will help give you the confidence to win the day.  Trust me.  This will be the best $20 you ever spent.

Interview Solution Interview Solution claims to be the dynamic new interview guide that equips you 100% with the knowledge, skills and tips that you need to successfully sell yourself to even the toughest interviewer.

Other Stuff

You need health insurance.  This is probably as good a place as any to comparison shop and make a halfway intelligent purchase.  And while these guys 'get it', the rest of the industry doesn't.  They have digitized a clunky process as best they could.  Two pieces of advice... SAVE every single page as you go through the application... otherwise you'll lose everything!  And start this process early.  These guys will give you an estimated start date for coverage, but it's only an estimate based on ideal circumstances.  Coverage begins only when the insurance company says it begins.  Before you do anything, you need to understand your COBRA rights.  COBRA (not to be confused with the deadly snake) is tricky business.   Here is a good place to start.
